The Wren Wildlife Group will be hosting its fourth annual bio-blitz on Wanstead Flats and in Wanstead Park this month. Tim Harris reports.

Interested in nature but don't really know what you're looking at? Want to find out more about what plants and animals can be seen on your doorstep? Well, why not come along to the Wren Wildlife Group's fourth annual bio-blitz on the weekend of 23 and 24 June?

All the events are based on Wanstead Flats or in Wanstead Park – and they're all free! We'll have experts on hand to show people butterflies and birds. There will be pond-dipping sessions that kids can get involved in. And after the sun goes down on the Saturday night, we'll even have a bat walk.

Some of the events for this year's bio-blitz will be 'set-piece' affairs, such as the bat walk and dawn chorus walk. Others will be more open-ended, with leaders keeping the activity going for an hour or two and people free to dip in and out, such as bee and spider surveying and pond-dipping.

Our friendly team of experts includes Tricia Moxey, a great all-round naturalist, who will be familiar to many for her annual fungi walks in Bush Wood. Tricia is also an expert botanist, so expect to see some interesting wildflowers on the walks she leads on Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon.

Francis Castro led last year's successful bat walk in Wanstead Park and he's coming back to do it again. Francis has a thorough knowledge of these mysterious creatures and is an expert with a bat detector!

This year's bio-blitz team also includes Gill James (skylarks), Ute Villavincenzio (ducks), Tony Madgwick and Mirza Rashid (bees), David Carr (spiders), Tommy Root (plant galls) and Nick and Penny Evans (snails).
